Principles of Next-Generation IoT systems

  • IFMA Facility Fusion 2017 at Caesar's Palace (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

The application of Internet of Things technology is gaining speed fast now within the field of Real Estate and FM. By the use of sensors and other communication devices, the behavior of people and things are quantified, providing the basis for radical redesign of support processes. However, with the growing adoption of IoT technologies, the related data volumes increase, the diversity of devices is growing fast and the means by which Things communicate is diversifying as well. In other words, systems providing IoT solutions are confronted with serious challenges in handling increased (device and network) diversity and matching requirements for scalability. At the same time, concerns around security and data privacy are growing in the marketplace. As a result, new IoT architectures are being put in place, designed to meet the challenges as stipulated. In this presentation, presenters are discussing some of the fundamental changes we see in the IoT systems landscape today, providing backgrounds for understanding and some initial guidance for those who are considering the adoption of IoT based solutions.

Guiding Principles for the Implementation of your Workplace Strategy

  • IFMA Facility Fusion 2017 at Caesar's Palace (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

This session is intended to discuss the importance of having ‘Guiding Principles’ for the implementation of your Workplace Strategy and how they can be the basis for the development of metrics and processes, as well as providing the foundation for self-evaluation. Is it simply a matter of deciding what you want the ‘workplace’ to look like? Is it all about ‘branding’ or is it more complicated? The session will talk about determining/developing the principles based on what is ‘better practice’ and impactful to you. Further, it will demonstrate how taking the principles and focusing on the output will assist with the ability to either self evaluate or create a means for trusted partners to evaluate adherence and develop a plan to conform. We then need to clearly understand the following: How can these principles be effective in determining Workplace Strategy? How do we leverage them? How do we present the positive influence in a consumable fashion? How do we measure our success?

Crafting Alliances: Rethinking our Approach to Enabling Better CEO Decisions in Place and Technology

  • IFMA Facility Fusion 2017 at Caesar's Palace (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

We’ve been talking about how to get FMs a seat at the table for years. Yet, we are still not there. We continue to watch on the sidelines as CEOs miss opportunities to leverage their workplace and technology. It’s time to re-think our approach! A recent study in the book Work on the Move 2 shows that when considering a major move or renovation project, CEOs do not consider their FM as the person to lead these projects. They prefer “someone who is a visionary and knows the intricacies of the business.” Nevertheless, CEOs do understand the need to form an alliance comprised of those with an enterprise view (CEO, CFO) and functional views (FM, HR, IT) to participate in these projects. Using real life examples, this session will show FMs how get in there early, craft an alliance, leverage technology and help CEOs make informed decisions and exploit their workplace for better business results.

The Magic That Happens When HR, RE, and IT Come Together on Workplace Change

  • IFMA Facility Fusion 2017 at Caesar's Palace (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

In most organizations, it wasn't a structured program that led to people working wherever and whenever. It just happened as a result of having the mobile tools that made it possible. But by letting it happen, rather than making it happen, both organizations and their people have missed out on potential cost savings, attraction and retention opportunities, productivity and effectiveness impacts, and more. Even many who have intentionally implemented flexible workplace strategies, have done so without the involvement of HR, IT, and other key constituents. Again, the result is typically less than optimal. In this session, we will hear from been-there-done-that practitioners who have made the journey to flexible work and what they learned from the experience.

Data Management requirements for FASB and IFRS

  • IFMA Facility Fusion 2017 at Caesar's Palace (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Starting in Fiscal year 2017, organizations will be required to provide FASB and IASB compliant lease accounting information. Although the reporting obligations on FASB ASC 842 regulations will be required from 2019 on, organizations will be held to report on lease related costs retroactively from 2017 on. The regulations include all leases, not only for buildings and spaces but for all assets in the domain of real estate and facility management. It would be deceptive to think that since 2019 is far away still, no immediate action is required. The new FASB and IASB standards require new types of data to be included, so they will need to be captured in-time. In order to be able to provide adequate lease accounting reports to the financial office, not only new data elements are to be captured but also traceability to the decision making processes has to be retained. In this presentation, presenters are explaining the impacts the new FASB and IFRS regulations have on data management as well as process tracking around lease management. Guidance on how to implement is given as well.

FASB and FAS 13: An Update on Latest Lease Accounting Regulations

  • IFMA WW 2016 San Diego Convention Center (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

New regulations for accounting in respect to leases have been issued by FASB as of February 2016. It is critical for facility managers to be aware of the impacts the new standard may have on their reporting obligations.. The FAS 13 accounting standard specifically outlines new regulations on how to classify leases as assets and liabilities and how to represent them correctly the balance sheet. The general expectation is that reporting compliant to the standard will be required from 2017 on. The FAS standard has seen numerous amendments since its conception, and is expected to see even further amendments made during 2016. This session will include discussion about the general standard. However, the session’s main focus will be on the FAS 13 structure and background in order to best explain the latest changes and the impacts these amendments hold for FM professionals. The “logic” behind the accounting standard will also be discussed in order to provide FM professionals a better understanding of the requirements necessary to accurately assess the impact to their individual businesses and to prepare them in practical ways to address those impacts.

Where the Smart Money Is Going: How Programmable, Digital Currencies Will Change FM

  • IFMA WW 2016 San Diego Convention Center (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Bitcoin may be the most familiar name, but it is only one of many programmable, digital currencies disrupting global finance. These new forms of virtual money, known collectively as crypto currencies, offer the promise of seamless global payments, completely traceable transaction chains and high levels of security. And cryptocurrencies are being used for everything from vending machine purchases to political campaign donations. But we are just beginning the journey into what some are calling “the future of money.” Crypto currencies may soon be used to enable self-enforcing contracts, in which payments can only be used for specific purposes defined in legal agreements. And that development undoubtedly will transform the whole business of negotiating and writing contracts for goods and services, including real estate leases and facility management activities. In this session, you will get a glimpse into a fast-developing future and will have the opportunity to explore some of the legal, ethical and practical questions raised by the emergence of “smart money.”

Finding the Signal amid the Noise: The Importance of Standards in an Information- Enabled Digital World

  • IFMA WW 2016 Sandiego Convention Center (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Data standards have long been important in supporting the ability to communicate among technology systems. In the current environment of big data, proliferating electronics and pervasive connectivity they have taken on an even greater importance. A tremendous amount of data is being generated today by our buildings, by the equipment and spaces within them and by people who carry and wear devices that emit and receive signals constantly. Standards offer the greatest hope for making sense – and making good use – of the streams of information coming at us from all directions. For facility management and real estate professionals, implementation of standards offers the promise that the dizzying profusion of relevant data coming from multiple sources in multiple formats can be matched, organized, shared and analyzed in ways that benefit decision-making, operations and planning. In this session, you will learn about how implementation of data standards can help you discover, capture and utilize the important information – the “signals” – amid the noisy storm of data being generated by our buildings, our equipment and ourselves.

The Evolving Workplace Restroom: Why the Experience Matters

  • IFMA WW 2016 San Diego Convention Center (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Everything communicates in your building. The lobby sets the tone for building culture; from the grain of wood at reception, to the species of fresh flowers to choice of overhead lighting. The elevators, meeting and work spaces are intentionally planned to reflect an image, creating a desired experience. But what of the office restrooms? In more than 100 years, little has changed in restroom management and design except for basic functional and aesthetic nuance. Yet employees are using restrooms in very different ways as a result of a dramatic workplace evolution. Open offices, densification, stressful commutes, active millennials, multicultural differences and the rise of women are just a few of the many reasons why the restroom is no longer just a place to do one's business. It represents not only a significant challenge with increased pressure and rising expectations but also an unprecedented opportunity to be strategically leveraged as a differentiating asset. What if restroom visits were in-between moments that uplifted, re-energized and refreshed so visitors leave feeling better than when they entered? What if restrooms became a sought after destination for regaining control and composure or a respite for a much needed moment of privacy? What if the restroom experience in your building became one of the most memorable and differentiating factors in your overall building satisfaction? This session will highlight principles of behavior science, anthropology, human psychology and the aggregation of marginal gains that may be leveraged to customize a differentiated restroom experience without a major renovation.

Work on the Move 2: Smart Futures

  • IFMA WW 2016 San Diego Convention Center (map)

One of the most striking terms we encounter today is “smart.” While the word, “connected” may be a better description in some cases, the emergence of new technologies that allow systems to actually learn (also referred to as “deep learning” or “machine learning”) is pushing us closer to truly revolutionizing how we interact and manage our buildings or rather how buildings interact and react to us. By understanding the real developments around these disruptive technologies (including IoT, Big Data and analytics) we can better plan for their adoption in the workplace as we move toward a smarter future. Join Work on the Move author, Eric Jaspers, in this session discussing the chapter of Work on the Move II that covers these topics.
